2026 Michelin Key Hotels go way beyond Toronto proper

This marks Year Three for the “hotel equivalent of the Michelin Star for restaurants.” If you’re unaware such a thing exists, it’s not surprising. In its wildly short lifespan, the Michelin Keys has already gone through a renaming and rebrand: Established in 2018, Michelin Guide’s previously dubbed ‘Tablet Hotels’ offered a “hand-picked selection” of hotels to meet “every taste and budget.” When it arrived in T.O. in 2022, the compendium revealed 20 destinations had passed muster.
In 2023, the Guide went a slightly different route. While the press release did refer to hotels, it appears there was no formal list per se. Instead, reference was made to establishments from the 2022 winners such as Ace Hotel and The SoHo and put the spotlight on “cutting-edge boutiques” such as The Drake and lodging in the “Plus” collection including The Hazelton Hotel.
Upon its return in ‘24, MG’s roundup arrived with a new name and concept - Michelin ‘Keys’ - to indicate the rank of establishments, analogous to their star system for restaurants. Hotels are awarded One, Two or Three Michelin Keys, “according to the level of experience they offer.”
One Michelin Key A very special stay
Two Michelin Keys An exceptional stay
Three Michelin Keys An extraordinary stay
That year however, only seven made the cut. What happened next is something prevalent in the early years of Michelin’s restaurant picks: The 2025 selections were a precise duplicate of the previous year’s. Interesting, as it was a year stacked with new hotels (as chronicled throughout the OPEN/CLOSED), and appeared to have welcomed more than some other years combined.
The 2026 Michelin Key Hotels Toronto & Region announced earlier today, have a similar ring to them: Eight made the grade, with all seven of last year’s picks returned crowned, and The Ritz-Carlton Toronto joining the flock. An additional two - Merrill House (w/ no onsite restaurant) and The Royal Hotel, both in Prince Edward County’s Picton - illustrates the compendium’s movement waay beyond city limits, as executed throughout the resto guides here in Toronto since 2024.

Add two all the way out in Kingston (Belvedere Hotel, The Smith Hotel) and one in Ottawa (Fairmont Chateau Laurier Gold Experience) and the lineup is leaning verry hard out-of-town. Crazy, as according to the city's biggest tourism group, "Toronto boasts more than 180 hotels with 43,000+ hotel rooms, from luxury properties, boutique hotels, full-service 3- and 4-star hotels."
Since its Toronto debut, no Three Keys have been awarded. At press time, the Guide consists of 155 Three-Keys, 657 Two-Keys and 2,020 One-Keys across the globe.
This announcement lands just days prior to the 2026 Michelin Guide Awards Ceremony for restaurants receiving Starred, Bib Gourmand, Recommended and other designations. One category won’t be returning however. Earlier this year, the Guide nixed their Green Star ranking system.
Update 26.09.26: A press release dated September 26 mentions Toronto's own Kimpton Saint George but it's not on the official list.
